I have decided to use this blog to write about the Ubuntu operating system, and various other Libre Software projects that surround it. I have used Ubuntu on-and-off for the past few years, but since 10.04 LTS it has become much more usable and more attractive to use. There are definite influences from Mac OS X in this version, and I believe it has helped to make the system more attractive and usable. In particular, the default brown theme that had always put me off Ubuntu has been changed to a dark theme with a purple desktop, making the system look much more professional I feel.
Many people have complained about the re-positioning of the window controls to the left-hand side of the title bar. It threw me a couple of times, but as a past Mac user I have adapted to it fairly quickly and have not seen the need to move them.
I like the way Gwibber, Evolution and Empathy have been integrated into the top menu bar, keeping the communication tasks together. Network Manager also is improved, and does not have any more issues with my wireless data dongle.
So far both of my computers have had Lucid Lynx installed onto them, and my fiancée's netbook has been updated to the Netbook Remix of Lucid.
